PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- The Miles golf team has been among the best in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the past five years and was looking to add another league championship to the dossier this season.
But for the second straight year, and third time in four years, the Golden Bears finished second at the SIAC Championship. Miles finished 22 strokes behind champion Albany State, which won the title for the second straight season.
Timothy Simpson shot a team-best 248 during the three-day event to pace Miles and make the All-Tournament team. He finished sixth overall.
Windy conditions were prevalent all week and the Golden Bears did their best to make shots in the tough conditions. After the first day, they were in third place, 15 strokes behind Albany State.
"After the rough conditions, we're not where we want to be but we're still in contention. Two more good showings and we should be able to come out on top," said senior
Vitthal Parker after Monday's round, where he shot 87. "The weather's supposed to get better so we're looking forward to the next two days. It should be fun."
Parker birdied his third hole in round two but found himself at 8 through 10 holes. He was able to stem the tide with seven pars over his last eight holes to shoot a team-low 81 on the second day. SIACÂ Freshman of the Year
Tyler Simmons also did well, shooting an 82Â as Miles trimmed three shots off their first-day score to move into second place. Unfortunately, it was still three shots behind Albany state, which increased its lead to 18 strokes.
Miles needed to go low in the final round and Simpson and
Taylor Simmons both shot 82 - good for a top-10 finish on the day. But the Golden Rams had two players break 80, including medalist Tyler Hanson's 79, as the Golden Bears shot 333 on the final day and finished at 1,000.
Parker (251) finished tied for 10th, followed by
Tyler Simmons (252, 12th),
Taylor Simmons (254, 13th) and
Josh Lewis (258, t-16th).
Christian Copen (268), who participated as an individual and did not count towards the team score, shot a second-round 81 en route to a tie for 21st among 36 participants.
The Golden Bears still have a tournament scheduled to wrap up the season as they participate in the PGA Minority Intercollegiate Golf Championships, which runs from May 10-13.
