Despite dropping an 11-4 decision to West Alabama on Wednesday, Miles had several opportunities to gain a win and earn a season series sweep. But the Golden Bears left 12 runners on base over the first eight innings in a one-run game before the Tigers exploded in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Miles trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the third when
Reeves Brashear but the team on the board with a booming home run, his sixth, to cut the deficit in half. UWA answered in the top of the fourth against starter
Lucas Howton (0-3) with a solo home run from Dominique Dawson and ultimately took a 4-1 lead.
The Golden Bears would put the first three on in the fourth before a sacrifice fly from
Kolby Brannon brought home
Xavius Burden for his team-leading 35th run batted in. They would get another when
Jacob Bisharat scored on a wild pitch to, again, slice the deficit to a single run. But Miles would leave runners on second and third, limiting further damage.
Burden would inflict his own damage with one out in the fifth. He mashed a solo home run, his second, off UWA starter Steffon Moore (4-3) to tie the game at 4. But the Tigers would answer with another solo shot, this one from Luke Phillips to start the sixth, to put them back in the lead.
Miles had two chances to tie the game ore take the lead late. In the seventh, the tying run was on third but pinch hitter
Justin Bisharat grounded out to second to end the threat. In the eighth,
Trevor Bates walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch with one out. The Golden Bears would ultimately load the bases with two outs, but
Jacob Bisharat would strike out swinging, ending another big opportunity.
Burden came in to pitch the ninth, his first appearance on the mound in 15 days. The first four hitters reached as part of a six-run inning as UWA took control. Joel Murphy and Gavin Rogers each had two-run doubles to help the Tigers coast to the win.
Miles opens a three-game series against LeMoyne-Owen on Friday in a rematch of last season's SIAC Championship game. The game will be played at Corner High School in Warrior. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
