A cavalcade of miscues in the field and on the bases were glaring as Miles dropped a doubleheader to Spring Hill on Wednesday, losing 7-3 and 10-2.
Kendruena McPherson had four hits over the two games but the Lady Bears (9-26, 9-4 SIAC West) made sox errors in the field and were retired seven times on the bases, giving the Badgers (20-13, 15-1) - who had 21 hits over the two games - extra help they did not need.
GAME 1: Spring Hill 7, Miles 3
Spring Hill scored five of its seven runs with two outs. The big play game in the fourth inning with the Lady Bears already trailing 1-0. Starter
Magen Rich (2-12) had gotten two outs but also walked tow batters and gave up a single to load the bases. Brooke Vosloh then pulled a pitch down the third-base line and into the corner, clearing the bases and giving the Badgers a 4-0 advantage,
The Miles deficit was 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth when the real baserunning blunders cost an opportunity to put runs on the board. Singles by
Jazzmyn Shelton and
Lydia Rodriguez put runners at the corners with no outs. But Rodriguez was called for leaving too early for the first out.
Kristie Looney then looked to have sacrificed Shelton home fr the first run. But Shelton did not slide and while she appeared to be safe, she was called out. Two pitches later, Looney was thrown out trying to steal second and the inning fizzled.
Miles did put together another strong rally in the sixth. The first three hitters reached base and
Davis Watkins singled to score McPherson and
Zakierra Webb. But
Ombreyah Daly would run right into a tag play on a fielder's choice for the first out. Watkins and
Alexus Gonzalez would execute a double steal to put runners on second and third with one out. Rich would hit a a sacrifice fly to center to score Watkins but Gonzalez, attempting to advance to third as the trail runner, was thrown out and the Lady Bears were only able to cut the deficit to 6-3. A two-out bases loaded walk to Vosloh in the seventh gave Spring Hill an insurance run and Miles went down in order to end the game.
GAME 2: Spring Hill 10, Miles 2 (five innings)
The errors in the field were the story in the nightcap and they started in the first inning. Catcher
Kendal Burrell was charged with the first one as she attempted to throw out Vosloh, who led off with a double against McPherson (6-10). The ball ended up in left field and the Badgers were on the board.
Miles had hoped to even the score in the bottom of the first but McPherson, who smoked a double to right center, was called out at third trying to stretch it into a triple and the Lady Bears would not score. Errors by Webb, Daly and Burrell opened the doors to a three-run second for the Badgers, who then led 4-0. Down 6-0 in the third, Looney singled and scored a double to right by McPherson. Webb would ground out to short but McPherson was thrown out at third as she tried to advance on the ground out, which snuffed another scoring opportunity.
In the fourth, Watkins would walk with one out but was retired after she left too early. Gonzalez would follow with a walk and steal second. Burrell would line a single to right to score her and cut the deficit to 6-2. But the Badgers would score four times in the top of the fifth to open a 10-2 advantage. Miles had hoped to extend the game after McPherson walked, then stole second and third with two outs. But Webb grounded out to third and Spring hill would earn a run-rule victory.
UP NEXT: Miles travels to Kentucky State for three games this weekend. The Lady Bears will have a chance to win the Western Division and earn a top seed for the upcoming SIACÂ Championships with two victories. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
