Miles has had its struggles this season against Gulf South Conference teams and that trend continued Tuesday as the Golden Bears dropped a 14-1 decision to West Georgia at the Pleasant Grove Athletic Complex. The loss ends the Golden Bears win streak at three games and drops them to 2-11 against teams from the GSC. It was also the first home defeat in six games.
UWG (19-10) got a pair of home runs and seven runs batted in from Price Peters as the Wolves had 16 hits against five Miles pitchers.
Lucas Howton (0-2) gave up five runs in three innings to take the loss for the Golden Bears (17-14), who had just seven hits - two from
Justin Bisharat.
The first two innings were scoreless as Miles left three runners in scoring position. UWG took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and Miles had a chance to mitigate further damage. But an error at first base opened the door for Peter to crush a two-out grand slam to left center for a 5-0 advantage. The Golden Bears got one of those runs back in the fourth when
Trevor Bates drove in
Kolby Brannon with two outs,
But in the fifth, Peters inflicted more damage. After the Wolves put the first two runners on, the catcher hit a three-run shot to center off of
Christopher Elias. It was part of a four-run frame that increased the Miles deficit to 9-1. UWG would also get a solo home run from Brian Dansereau in the sixth. The Golden Bears would get just three more hits the remainder of the contest, two of which were erased on double plays.
Miles is back at the Pleasant Grove Athletic Complex on Friday when it opens a three-game conference series against Tuskegee. The single game will begin at noon.
