Two late rallies give Lady Bears series win

JACKSON, Tenn. -- Two big four-run innings helped the Miles softball team win a three-game series over Lane this weekend at Muse Park. The Lady Bears (8-22, 8-2 SIAC West) split a doubleheader on Friday, winning 7-6 before falling 5-0 in the nightcap. They would defeat the Drgaons (5-11, 4-6) 5-2 in the rubber game on Saturday. Davis Watkins (four hits, .900 slugging percentage, three runs batted in) delivered offensively while Kendruena McPherson picked up both wins in the circle for Miles.

GAME 1: Miles 7, Lane 6

Zakierra Webb singled with two outs and stole second before Watkins hit a two-run home run - her third of the season - in the top of the first to put Miles on the board. But when the Lady Bears came up in the seventh, they trailed 5-3 and needed a spark.

Chynna Gross started the rally with a pinch-hit leadoff single to center. Kendal Burrell and Kristie Looney followed with consecutive singles to load the bases. McPherson would reach on a fielder's choice that scored Gross and Jazzmyn Shelton's ground out to short scored Burrell to tie the game at 5. Webb hit one back to the circle but the pitcher had trouble fielding the ball, which allowed her to reach and Looney to score. McPherson would score on a RBI ground out by Watkins and Miles was three outs away from a come-from-behind win.

Those three outs did not come that easy for McPherson, who struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs. One of those earned runs came on a one-out home run by Kristen Young that halved the Lady Bears advantage. The Dragons would get the tying run to second with two outs but Erica Webster flied out to center to end the game.

GAME 2: Lane 5, Miles 0

Mice'la Ross (4-5) allowed just three hits in 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Dragons. Miles had runners on base in five of the seven innings and had runners in scoring position four times but were not able to push a run across.

Magen Rich (2-11) pitched a complete game for Miles but gave up eight hits, seven walks and hit a batter. Miles had just four hits, with Ombreyah Daly getting two of them. Davis Watkins' double was the only hit that went for extra bases.

GAME 3: Miles 5, Lane 2

Miles trailed 2-1 going into the sixth but Alexus Gonzalez drove in Daly on a fielder's choice to tie the game. Gross followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Watkins to give the Lady Bears the lead. A dropped fly ball led to two unearned runs, the last coming when Lydia Rodriguez singled home Shelton to provide the final margin.

McPherson (5-8) allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out six to earn the complete game victory. She moved to 5-1 with a 1.86 earned run average and four complete games in conference play.

UP NEXT: Miles will travel to take on Mississippi College in a doubleheader on Apr. 4. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
