MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- It looked like Home Run Derby Tuesday afternoon at Johnson Field when Miles put its six-game win streak on the line against Montevallo. Unfortunately for the Golden Bears (14-13), they were the ones serving the fan-friendly long balls as the Falcons (19-9) hit eight of them in a 17-2 and 7-3 doubleheader sweep.
Ryan Bargery had three hits and
Xavius Burden had two runs batted in for Miles.
GAME 1: Montevallo 17, Miles 2
The game got away from the Golden Bears early as starter
Matthew White (0-2) did not make it out of the first inning. He gave up a three-run homer to Caleb Ledbetter and allowed five runs in 2/3 of an inning. Things did not get much better for
Jacob Schuster, who allowed four home runs between the third and fourth innings to give the Falcons a 10-1 lead.
Kolby Brannon had the only RBI of the game for Miles on a sacrifice fly in the sixth that scored
Reeves Brashear.
GAME 2: Montevallo 7, Miles 3
The Falcons continued to play long ball against Miles starter
Lucas Howton (0-1), who was making his first collegiate start. After giving up a two-run in the first, he allowed a two-out home run in the second and two more home runs in the fourth to give Montevallo a 6-0 cushion. The Golden Bears trailed 7-0 in the sixth but began to make a charge. Burden sparked the two-out rally with a two-run double that scored Bargery and
Alex Bentley. He would score when
Justin Bisharat followed with a single but that would end the run scoring for Miles on the afternoon.
UP NEXT: The Golden Bears resume SIAC play with a three-game series at Lane beginning Friday.
