Miles finished its conference-opening series against LeMoyne-Owen with a doubleheader sweep, posting 16-3 and 14-1 run-rule wins over the Magicians on Tuesday afternoon. Zakierra Webb (four hits, five runs batted in, two stolen bases) and Alexus Gonzalez (three hits, five RBI) were the offensive stars while Magen Rich and Kendruena McPherson were dominant from the circle for the Lady Bears (3-18, 3-0 SIAC West).

GAME 1: Miles 16, LeMoyne-Owen 3 (five innings)

Miles scored seven times in the first inning off Magicians starter Quena Johnson to take control. Rich gave the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead as McPherson scored on a fielder's choice. Webb then knocked in two with a single to right for a 3-0 advantage. Chynna Gross picked up a RBI on another's fielder's choice before Gonzalez broke it open with a bases-clearing double as the first eight hitters reached base.

Rich (1-10) would not need anything else as she held LOC to just one single over the first four innings and allowed just three hits with four strikeouts overall as Miles amassed a 16-0 advantage. In the second Gross added a RBI single, Gonzalez a two-run double, and Kristie Looney a run-scoring single. Rich, Gross and Webb knocked in runs in the third and Davis Watkins added a RBI in a two-run fourth.

GAME 2: Miles 14, LeMoyne-Owen 1 (five innings)

One day after dominating the Magicians, McPherson (2-6) was at it again. She gave up just two hits - both in the first inning - and retired the last 13 hitters she faced while striking out 10. She added two hits, two runs batted in and three runs scored as Miles scored in every inning.

LOC took its first lead of the series when Jamie Tharpe belted a towering solo home run with one out in the first. But Miles would tie the score with a run-scoring double by Jazzmyn Shelton in the bottom of the frame.

The Magicians would encounter some tough luck in the second as the Lady Bears took the lead for good. With one out and a runner on first, Kendal Burrell lined out to third base. The throw over to first appeared to be in time for an inning-ending double play but the ball was dropped, which allowed the inning to continue. An error by Tharpe at shortstop brought in one run and a RBI single by Looney added another. A third run came across when McPherson hit a shot to third bases that careened off the bag and into foul territory. She hustled into second for a double and on the throw to try and nab her, Looney scooted home for a 4-1 lead.

Miles would score twice more in the third before busting the game open with eight runs in the fourth. The Lady Bears sent 13 hitters to the plate with Davis Watkins getting two hits and two RBI during the onslaught. McPherson reached base twice, the last on a two-run single. Ombreyah Daly, Webb and Looney also had RBI in the inning.
