JACKSON, Tenn. -- Lane avenged a loss from two weeks ago, defeating Miles 79-71 Monday night at J.F. Lane Gymnasium.
The Dragons (11-10, 9-7 SIACÂ West) took the lead at the 13-minute mark of the first half and did not trail again. But the frustration for the Golden Bears (5-15, 4-9) came from having cutting the deficit to two points on four different occasions but never being able to, at least, tie the score.
The toughest sequence may have come with just more than five-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Sheldon Wright had just hit two free throws to pull Miles to within 62-60 and
Jeffrey Dockett would foul on the ensuing Dragons possession. Tevyn Roberts would miss the free throw but
Soren Morkeberg would let an uncontested rebound fall through his hands and Lane would retain possession. After a missed 3-pointer for Myles Lee, Kendarius Ash would get the offensive rebound and putback slam to give Lane a 64-60 led. Miles would never get any closer the remainder of the game.
Miles trailed 40-30 at the half but came out firing to start the second half.
Nathan Sheffield drained two 3-pointers and
Carl Garcia added another during an 11-3 run over the first four minutes to pull within 43-41. But the Dragons got a 3-ball from Jade Patrick - one of 10 on the game for Lane - and quickly pushed the advantage back to five points.
Ash had 11 points and 17 rebounds while Ai'Shontis Sanders went 7-of-15 - all 3-pointers - from the field for a game-high 23 points to lead the Dragons. Dockett (19 points, four rebounds, three steals), Wright (16 points, two assists, two steals) and Morkeberg (13 points, four rebounds) all scored in double figures for Miles, which hosts Tuskegee Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
