PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. -- Miles dropped a doubleheader to Mississippi College, 11-1 and 7-2, Tuesday afternoon to run its winless streak to 17 games.
Kendal Burrell drove in two runs on the day and
Kristie Looney had two hits for the Lady Bears (0-16). The Choctaws (7-7) allowed just seven hits over the two games.
GAME 1: Mississippi College 11, Miles 1 (five innings)
Pitchers Chyna Gross (0-1) and
Magen Rich allowed just six hits but wildness from the circle (nine walks, two hit batters, four wild pitches), as well as struggles in the field (three errors) helped the Choctaws to the run-rule victory. Miles had just one hit - a Looney single - in the first three innings and got their only run without needing a hit.
Jazzmyn Shelton struck out swinging but reached on a passed ball. She reached second on a wild pitch and with one out, stole third. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Burrell, which made the score 9-1. The only other hit came on a Rich single in the fifth.
GAME 2: Mississippi College 7, Miles 2
Kendruena McPherson (0-5) struck out a season-high eight batters but was upstaged by Choctaws pitcher Cori Cooper (1-0), who struck out 13 and allowed just five hits. Mississippi College took a 2-0 lead in the third but the Lady Bears got one back in the fourth.
Davis Watkins singled and stole second. With two outs,
Zakierra Webb singled to score Watkins, which cut the deficit in half. Webb would steal second but
Stephanie Roper struck out swinging to end the threat.
The game got away from the Lady Bears in the fifth. After getting the first two hitters out, McPherson allowed four hits - a single, double, triple and home run - that pushed the score to 6-1. Miles would get a run back in the sixth when Burrell drove home Shelton with a ground out. The Choctaws would add a run in the seventh to increase their lead. The Lady Bears would get a one-out double from
Ombreyah Daly - the only extra-base hit of the day for Miles - but after she stole third, consecutive strikeouts ended the game.
UP NEXT: The Lady Bears travel north to take on Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday. First pitch of a scheduled doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
