TUSKEGEE, Ala. -- There were several points where it appeared that Miles had done enough to put away Tuskegee and earn a season-sweep of the rival Golden Tigers.
But in the waning moments of Saturday's game, the Golden Bears threw the game away. A turnover on an inbounds pass turned into an uncontested dunk by James Eads with eight seconds left that gave Tuskegee a 67-66 win at Chappie James Arena.
Jeffrey Dockett had a chance to win it as time expired, but he missed on two shots that sent Miles to the shocking defeat in a game it led by eight points with 62 seconds remaining.
Miles (6-16, 5-10 SIAC) led by 10 points at halftime (12 after
Nathan Sheffield scored on the first possession of the second half) but trailed by six points midway through the second half as Tuskegee (5-19, 3-12) got hot from the field, especially Myles Thomas. He drained three 3-pointers and scored all 12 of his points in a six-minute stretch as Tuskegee retook the lead.
The Golden Bears, though, fought back. They held the Golden Tigers to just two baskets over a near seven-minute stretch to seemingly take control of the game. When
Robert Jones sank four straight free throws, Miles led 62-54 with 1:02 left. But Tuskegee never went away.
Damian Archer missed two free throws, which stood out as Miles went 14-of-17 from the free throw line, and Travis Flagg attacked the basket for a layup that cut the deficit to 62-59.
Dockett would calmly make two free throws on the ensuing possession but Sheffield fouled Daniel Roach on a 3-point attempt. Roach would make two of the free throws, still Miles was ahead 64-61 with 24 seconds left. A turnover by
Carl Garcia led to an easy layup by Eads to cut the deficit to one but Dockett would make two more free throws to push the advantage back to three points with 14 seconds left.
An offensive putback by Cam Grepke again cut the deficit to one point before the game-changing play. Miles attempted a long pass into the frontcourt after the Grepke basket, but he intercepted the pass, threw it back into the frontcourt to Eads, who then stolled right down the middle of the lane and finished with an emphatic dunk to give TU the lead. Dockett would dribble up court and got a good look at the basket but it hit the front of the rim. He tracked down the rebound and fired up a last-ditch 3-pointer that hit the side of the backboard to end the game.
Eads had 24 points to lead Tuskegee. Dockett had 15 points, Jones had 10 points and nine rebounds, and
Sheldon Wright added 10 points for Miles, which plays Monday at Albany State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
