Since the 2010-11 season, Miles has enjoyed only four win streaks of at least three games. In the Golden Bears' first season under head coach
Fred Watson, they have already joined that list.
Avery Brown (14 points, three assists, two steals) paced a balanced effort as the Golden Bears had little trouble handling Carver College, 68-48, Thursday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Miles (3-2) held the Cougars (0-12) to less than 27 percent shooting from the field and while the team did not have one of its best nights statistically, the eventual outcome was never in peril. Twelve different Golden Bears scored and 13 had at least one rebound.
Miles led early but a 3-pointer by Tyler Thornton gave Carver a 15-13 lead with 10:52 left in the first half. But the lead lasted 12 seconds for the Cougars as the Golden Bears scored the next 15 points to grab a comfortable lead that extended to 34-21 at halftime.
The Cougars would score the first seven points of the second half to cut their deficit to six points less than four minutes in, but they would not get any closer. Ahead 38-31, Miles would score 13 consecutive points to open a 51-31 lead with eight minutes remaining. Brown and
Damian Archer (nine points) each had four points during the outburst while the defense forced Carver to miss 11 consecutive shots during the six-minute span. A breakaway dunk by
Miles Meredith with less than a minute to go gave the Golden Bears their biggest lead at 68-46, but that was just the icing on the cake of a resounding victory.
Antonio Gardner (19 points, 11 rebounds, five assists) and Rayford Washington (18 points) were the top scorers for Carver. Meredith and
Jeffrey Dockett each had eight points while
Rashawn Chapman (two points, seven rebounds) and
Devonte Fuller (five points seven rebounds) were the top rebounders for Miles, which plays next at West Alabama on Dec. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
