LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- Miles trailed by as many as 20 points in its game Tuesday night against West Alabama but still had the final possession of the game with a chance to send the contest into overtime.
But a 3-pointer by center
Jose Roman-Angueria was off the mark and the Golden Bears came up just short, falling 57-54 to the Tigers at Pruitt Hall. The loss brings an end to Miles' (3-3) three-game win streak and allowed UWA (5-2) to sweep the season series.
Nathan Sheffield and
Avery Brown each had 13 points and were a big part of the Golden Bears' second-half surge.
The first half was abysmal for Miles. The team shot just 25 percent from the field and had more turnovers (eight) than field goals (seven). UWA scored 14 consecutive points early in the half to open a big lead and when Josh Fleming (12 points) made a free throw with 30 seconds left in the period, the Tigers led by 20 points. A bucket by Brown with 11 seconds left sent the Golden Bears to the locker rooms trailing 37-19.
But the final eight minutes of the game were an entirely different story. Down 15 points, Miles put the clamps on the UWA offense. Six turnovers and two missed field goals by the Tigers allowed the Golden Bears to storm back into the contest. Brown scored seven points during a 14-0 run over a 3:24 span. When
Damian Archer scored with 5:12 remaining, the deficit was trimmed to 52-51.
Unfortunately, Miles could not get over the hump. After forcing another turnover - one of 11 in the second half for UWA - the golden Bears had a chance to take the lead. But the Tigers got their own steal and drained a 3-pointer to push their advantage back to four points. Miles made just one field goal over the final five minutes, a bucket by Roman-Angueria with 40 seconds left, to pull Miles within 55-54. But UWA, which made just two baskets over the final five minutes, got a big score from Ricky Dunnaway (17 points, nine rebounds) with 11 seconds left to establish the final score.
Acie Vance added 15 points for West Alabama.
Devonte Fuller had six points, five rebounds and two steals while Archer had five points, five assists and three rebounds for Miles, which plays Saturday at Montevallo. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
