ATLANTA --
Devante Fuller had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists to lead five players in double figures as Miles upset 11th-ranked Morehouse 81-63 Monday night at Forbes Arena. The win was the second straight for the Golden Bears (2-2, 2-0 SIAC West) and the first road win against the Maroon Tigers (4-1, 1-1 SIAC East) since 2011.
The Golden Bears led for all but 1:40 of the contest and never trailed by more than two points. Morehouse turned the ball over 16 times and Miles turned them into 25 points. Even more impressive was Miles' 22-for-23 performance from the charity stripe, including perfection in 13 second half attempts.
Damian Archer had 16 points and went 13-for-13 on free throws.
Miles opened a seven-point lead in the first half but found itself trailing 28-26 with two minutes remaining. But consecutive technical fouls by Morehouse sent
Jelani Watson-Gayle to the free throw line and he drained four consecutive free throws to put the Golden Bears back in front. A bucket by
Umar Frost right before the horn gave Miles a 36-30 lead at halftime.
The Golden Bears opened an early eight-point lead in the second half but Omar Alston (13 points, 17 rebounds) scored with 12:35 remaining to give Morehouse a 48-47 lead. But Watson-Gayle (11 points, seven rebounds) scored on the next Miles possession to regain the lead for good. The Maroon Tigers trailed by three with 1:35 to go but Fuller knocked down a 3-pointer to give Miles some space and start a game-ending 15-0 run to seal the victory.
Robert Andrews had a team-high 18 points for Morehouse.
LaByron Harris (13 points) and
Jose Roman-Angueria (11 points) also scored in double figures for Miles, which hosts Carver College Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
