FORT VALLEY, Ga. --
Sheldon Wright was one of the top 3-point shooters in the country last season but, until recently, had struggled to find the consistency that made him such a threat.
The last three games, though, the 3-point trigger has been closer to automatic and it showed in Miles' 76-72 win over Fort Valley State Monday night at the HPER Arena. The senior guard tied his career high for the second straight game, scoring 31 points and knocking down 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. Over the last three games, he is shooting 67 percent from downtown and averaging nearly 30 points per game.
Wright's 3-pointer with 5:09 left in the first half gave Miles (3-10, 2-3 SIAC West) the lead for good as part of a 13-0 run that helped the Golden Bears to a 35-27 halftime advantage. But his 3-point stroke game really caught fire in the second half. He knocked down two triples on back-to-back possessions that gave Miles a 42-27 lead less than three minutes into the half.
But FVSUÂ (9-8, 6-3 SIACÂ East) came roaring back. Over the next three-and-a-half minutes, they scored 14 straight points to cut the deficit to a single point. But Wright would drive to the basket for a bucket to give the Golden Bears some space. Then he would drill another 3-ball less than a minute later to push the advantage to 48-41 with 12:21 left.
While Wright was hot, it was not as if he was the only shooter getting it done for Miles.
Nathan Sheffield made three from long range and
Carl Garcia added two as the Golden Bears shot 48 percent from long distance against the Wildcats and have made 51 percent of their 3-pointers the past three games. On four consecutive possessions, Sheffield (11 points, six rebounds) sandwiched two Wright 3-pointers with two of his own to give the Golden Bears a 67-57 lead with just under six minutes to go.
The Wildcats would make a final run, cutting the deficit to two points and missing two shots to tie the game or take the lead with less than three minutes remaining. Wright would score to push the score to 71-67 and
Damian Archer (13 points, six rebounds, four points, four steals) would close the game out scoring the final five points to seal the win.
Walter Foster had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Fort Valley State. Garcia (nine points, six rebounds, seven assists) and
Robert Jones (four points, eight rebounds, two blocks) had solid performances for the Golden Bears, who play at Central State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
