WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- Miles had five players score in double figures but could not get the stops when it needed as Central State pulled away for an 89-80 win Saturday at Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium.
The Golden Bears (3-11, 2-5 SIAC West) got off to a solid start, shooting the ball well and opening an early lead. But with the game tied at 30 with less than a minute left in the first half, the defense started to falter. Miles would miss its last three shots and on two of them, the Marauders (5-11, 4-6) would run out and score easily, helping them to a 35-30 halftime lead. CSU would extend that lead to 38-30 when Chris Scott (24 points, 12 rebounds) nailed a 3-pointer to start the second half.
The Marauders, though, would not just run away. Miles would tie the game at 47 on a layup by
Jeffrey Dockett (11 points, three steals) with 12:42 left and looked to have some momentum. But the defensive lapses would reappear, with CSU either getting easy access to the rim or drawing fouls. The Golden Bears would fall behind by 11 with just less than seven minutes remaining and they would not get closer than five points the rest of the way.
Damian Archer went 7-of-8 from the field and scored a career-high 19 points in the loss.
Nathan Sheffield scored 15 points and had four assists,
Sheldon Wright had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds,
Carl Garcia had 12 points and six rebounds, and
Aron Stewart added eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks for the Golden Bears, who play at Kentucky State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
