COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Coming into Saturday's game against Benedict, the Miles men's basketball team has scored more than 100 points just three times in the last 15 seasons. But after a 116-104 loss to the Tigers, the Golden Bears have lost in two of what is now four of those occasions.
Sheldon Wright tied a career-high with 31 points and five players scored in double figures for Miles (2-10, 1-4 SIAC West) but Benedict (14-3, 7-2 SIAC East) shot 64 percent from the field and overcame a brief second-half deficit to win going away. The 116 points was the most the Golden Bears have allowed this season and the most in any season since giving up 128 to Florida Southern during the 2015-16 campaign. This was also the first time Miles had lost a game in which it had scored at least 100 points since a 114-112 double overtime loss to Fort Valley State in Dec. 2008.
Miles trailed by 14 points midway through the first half but a 20-6 run over a five-minute span helped the Golden Bears forge a 39-all tie with 4:52 left. The game was tied at 47 with 2:12 left but Benedict shut down the Golden Bears and went into the half with a 52-47 lead.
Aron Stewart (12 points) scored four of the Golden Bears six points in the first 90 seconds of the second half to give Miles a 55-54. But the Tigers would go on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Worse, despite shooting 60 percent from the field and nearly 64 percent on 3-pointers, Miles went nearly six minutes without a field goal after taking the brief lead. By the time
Carl Garcia (21 points, four rebounds, three assists) scored with 12:45 left, Benedict would lead 74-63 and Miles would never get the deficit under double digits.
Brandon Morris had 31 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Cairo Brown added 29 points and six assists for Benedict.
Jeffrey Dockett (14 points) and
Damian Archer (10 points) were solid contributors for Miles, which plays at Fort Valley State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
