ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- In a tale of two halves, the Miles women's basketball team controlled the first but came up short in the second. Unfortunately, the Lady Bears missed 22-of-28 shots over the final 20 minutes, which allowed Claflin to erase a halftime deficit and earn a 52-45 win at Tullis Arena Thursday night.
Miles (3-7, 1-2 SIAC) scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in the first half. A 3-point play by
Jasmine Hollis with 4:30 left in the second quarter gave the Lady Bears a 20-12 lead - their largest of the game - and they went into the half with a 25-20 advantage.
Even as the Lady Bears were controlling most of the action, Claflin (9-7, 6-2) was showing signs that it was ready to turn the tide. The Panthers were dominating on the offensive glass, at one point holding an 11-0 advantage. Overall, they outrebounded the Lady Bears 45-30 with 15 offensive rebounds that led to 10 second chance points.
Amoni Walker nailed a 3-pointer to give Miles a 31-25 lead early in the third quarter but from there, the baskets became scarce. Claflin would take its first lead with less than three minutes left in the third. A 3-pointer from
Alexis Jones would tie the game at 34 but the Panthers would lead 37-35 going into the fourth. The Lady Bears would not regain the lead on the final period, going 3-for-15 from the field.
Walker and
Najla Shamsid-Deen each scored eight points while Jones and
Victoria Sutton each had seven points for Miles, which plays at Benedict on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
