COLUMBIA, S.C. -- If there is one team that has caused Miles a significant amount of consternation over the past five years, it has been Benedict. But Saturday afternoon, the Lady Bears were finally able exact a bit of revenge.
Miles got 12 points (on 5-of-5 shooting) from
Katrice Jackson and 11 points and five assists from
Victoria Sutton in a 58-55 win at Mays HRC Arena. The Lady Bears (4-7, 2-2 SIAC West) trailed coming into the fourth quarter but was able to defeat the Tigerettes (4-13, 4-5 SIAC East) for the first time since the 2011-12 season, a span of nine games.
The Lady Bears trailed by one early in the fourth quarter when
Alexis Jones caught the Benedict defense napping. On an inbounds play underneath the basket, Jones tossed the ball off the unsuspecting defender, picked up the loose ball, and scored on a reverse layup that gave Miles a 48-47 advantage with 7:38 remaining. The Tigerettes would not retake the lead.
When
Jasmine Hollis scored with 1:55 left, Miles held a 55-49 lead. But Benedict didn't fold. After
Frantisha Tyson missed two free throws, the Tigerettes had a chance to tie the game. But a desperation three by MiKeisha Moore fell short and the Lady Bears secured the victory.
Shanaissa White and Shirvel Luke each had 13 points for Benedict.
Raiana Johnson (eight points, seven rebounds) and
Taylor Terry (seven points, three rebounds, two blocks) had solid efforts for Miles, which plays at Fort Valley State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
