FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The offensive woes continued for the Miles women's basketball team, which dropped a 59-37 decision to Kentucky State at the Exum Center Monday night. The loss was the third consecutive for the Lady Bears (4-10, 2-5 SIAC West) and the seventh straight to the Thorobrettes (6-11, 6-4) dating back to the 2013-14 season.
Miles got three quick scores in the paint to open a 7-6 lead with 4:08 left in the first quarter. But from there, KSU grabbed control of the contest. The Thorobrettes would pitch a shutout for the remainder of the quarter and scored 12 straight points to take an 18-7 lead. A 3-point play by
Jasmine Hollis (six points, eight rebounds) with 5:42 left cut the deficit to 20-18. But another end-of-quarter scoring drought sent the Lady Bears into the half trailing 29-18.
Things did not get much better in the third quarter as Miles missed 10 of its first 11 field goal attempts. KSU had opened an 18-point lead by that point and would pull ahead by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bears, who did not dress four players due to a variety of ailments, we unable to produce enough offense the entire game, shooting just 23 percent from the field.
Katrice Jackson and
Alexis Jones each had eight points and four rebounds and
Darika Chelsey added six points for Miles, which plays at home on Saturday when it hosts Lane. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
