Trying to erase a three-game losing streak, Miles raced out to a huge lead against Lane Saturday afternoon. While the Dragons were able to erase a double-digit deficit, key buckets down the stretch helped the Lady Bears avert disaster in a 62-58 win at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Jasmine Hollis (16 points, 16 rebounds) set career-highs in points and rebounds while collecting her sixth double-double of the season and
Taylor Terry (3 points, eight rebounds, four blocks) added career marks in points and blocked shots for the Lady Bears (5-10, 3-5 SIAC West). Chloe Roberts had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Lane (3-15, 3-7), which has now lost five straight to Miles and eight of the last nine meetings overall.Â
The way the game started, it did not appear that there would be any late-game drama of which to speak. The Lady Bears used a 13-1 run midway through the first quarter to open a big lead, one that stood at 18-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Dragons went 2-of-14 from the field with five turnovers during the first 10 minutes and missed their last seven shots of the period. The lid was still on the basket for Lane to start the second quarter and when
Raiana Johnson scored with under seven minutes left before halftime, Miles held a 24-8 lead - its biggest of the contest.
The tide began to turn right before half time. After a
Frantisha Tyson (seven points, three assists) 3-pointer with just more than three minutes left in the second quarter, the Lady Bears would not make another basket. The Dragons were able to get the deficit to single digits by the half, then started the second half on an 11-2 run. A Rickera Martin 3-point play with 5:22 left in the third quarter gave Lane a 35-33 lead and Miles was looking for answers.
The Lady Bears would find their salvation at the free throw line. Terry would make two free throws at 35 and Miles would score its next nine points from the charity stripe (in 10 attempts) to retake the lead. When
Ashley McCrear (three points, four rebounds) knocked down a short jumper with less than a minute left in the third quarter, it ended a six-minute-plus drought from the field but the Lady Bears were able to increase their lead to five points during the stretch.
The Miles lead was just three points going into the fourth quarter but when
Alexis Jones (five points) scored with just more than six minutes remaining, the Lady Bears led 51-43. The Dragons would continue to fight. Martin (11 points) would score with 1:12 left to cut their deficit to 57-55 but Hollis responded with a bucket of her own on Miles' ensuing possession and Lane would not get any closer.
The Lady Bears are back in action Monday when they host LeMoyne-Owen. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
