Miles advances to quarterfinals
Box Score
Trying to beat a team three times in one season can be an arduous task but Miles' men's basketball team was able to do just that Tuesday night in the opening round of the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Championships.
Shaquille Cook scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds whileÂ
Henrique Cistrunk had 16 points,11 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals as Miles battled back after squandering a 10-point lead in the second half to take a 73-65 decision over Albany State at the Bill Harris Arena. The win sends the Golden Bears (8-20) into the quarterfinals against Clark Atlanta on Thursday night at 7:45 p.m. while the loss sends the Golden Rams (10-19) home.
Miles, the No. 3 seed from the Western Division, led by four at halftime but a three-point play by Cistrunk gave the Golden Bears a 44-34 lead less than three minutes into the second half. But with 9:16 remaining, the advantage was gone as the Golden Rams, the No. 6 seed from the Eastern Division had taken a 53-52 lead on a Michael Green (four points, five rebounds) bucket.
A minute later, a basket by
Joshua Johnson (four points, four rebounds, three assists) put Miles back in front to stay. The Golden Bears defense would get stingy, allowing just two Albany State field goals over the final eight minutes and taking several charges that negated some Golden Rams scores. Cook sealed the deal with an emphatic dunk that gave Miles the season sweep and sent it to the next round.
Jadon Davis had 15 points and six rebounds while Juwan High added 13 points for Albany State.
E. Reginald Smalls had 17 points and six rebounds and
Sheldon Wright added eight points off the bench for Miles.
