Big hits missing in DH loss to UAH
Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2
Miles could not get the bats started in the opener against Alabama Huntsville on Wednesday and could not get the big hit when needed in the nightcap as the Golden Bears were swept 10-2 and 7-3 at historic Rickwood Field.
Ryan Bargery.
Trevor Bates,
Alex Bentley and
Roderick Ransom each had two hits over the two games and
Jacob Schuster had a solid effort from the mound in the Game 2 loss.
GAME 1: UAH 10, Miles 2
Matthew White pitched himself into and out of trouble with minimal damage through the first four innings but the roof caved in during a 6-run fifth. With one out, he gave up a opposite field 3-run home run to Brady Bedingfield. He was pulled with two outs after allowing another run and leaving a man on base.
Christopher Elias promptly came in and served up a 2-run blast to Ben Rhodes and the Chargers had an insurmountable 9-0 advantage.
Kolby Brannon would score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth and Bates' sacrifice fly in the seventh scored pinch runner
Alex Foster but it was not nearly enough. The Golden Bears had only six hits in the game - all singles, two by Ransom - and were never able to sustain an offensive rally.
GAME 2: UAH 7, Miles 3
Miles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but let go of an opportunity to do big damage. The Golden Bears put their first three hitters on base but
Peyton Logan hit into a double play that plated Bargery and the rally quickly ended. UAH would struggle getting to Schuster, who allowed just one hit over five innings. But a one-out wild pitch allowed a runner to advance to third and he would score on a sacrifice fly to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead.
Schuster allowed a leadoff double in the sixth and was replaced by
Morgan Johnson, who gave up two run - one on a balk, the other charged to Schuster - as UAH opened up a 4-1 lead. Miles would get those runs back in the bottom of the frame, getting two-out RBI from
Lavontae LaCount and
Justin Bisharat that cut the deficit to one and put the tying run on second base. But pinch hitter
Darione Adkison just got under a pitch and flied out to left field to end the inning. The Chargers would score three times in the top of the seventh and the Golden Bears would drop the finale.
Bargery and Bentley each had two hits for the Golden Bears.
