ALBANY, Ga. -- With two seconds left in a tie game, Miles guard
Sheldon Wright knew he was going to get the ball and he knew what he wanted to do with it when he got it.
The result was a perfect ending for the surging Golden Bears. Wright's off-balanced jumper from the corner hit nothing but net as the buzzer sounded in a 64-61 win over Albany State Saturday afternoon at the HPER Complex. The win was the second straight and fourth in the last five for Miles (5-17, 5-6 SIAC), which swept the season series from the Golden Rams (10-14, 5-9).
Miles led by 10 points with eight-and-a-half minutes left but watched the entire lead evaporate by the six-minute mark. Albany State had opened a four-point lead with three minutes to go before the Golden Bears began their comeback.
Baskets by
Shaquille Cook (12 points, six rebounds) and
Henrique Cistrunk (13 points, nine rebounds) tied the game at 59 before a short jumper by
Carl Garcia (10 points, seven rebounds) gave Miles a two-point advantage with 45 seconds remaining. But Garcia would foul Randy McClure (15 points) as he scored on an offensive putback with 23 seconds to go to tie the score. But McClure would miss the ensuing free throw and
Joshua Johnson (11 points, four rebounds) would grab the rebound, setting up the final sequence. Miles' first chance at the win missed and the ball went out of bounds. But Johnson delivered a perfect inbound pass to Wright, who nailed the game-winner and set off a mini celebration with his teammates.
Michael Green (13 points, nine rebounds) and Devontay Ward (12 points) scored in double figures for the Golden Rams.
E. Reginald Smalls had seven points and
KeAndre Swopes had four points and six rebounds for Miles, which travels to Fort Valley State Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled fo 7 p.m.
