Katrice Jackson enjoyed a career day,
Jasmine Hollis added a double-double, and Miles used a game-defining run in the third quarter to defeat Paine 64-52 on Saturday at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It was the first conference victory for the Lady Bears (3-6, 1-1 SIAC), who ended a three-game losing streak while winning their third straight over the Lady Lions (0-9, 0-4).
The game was tied at 15 after one quarter and Miles took the lead for good in the second quarter on a jumper by
Victoria Sutton with less than seven minutes to go before the half. Still, the lead was just 29-24 at halftime and the teams traded baskets to open the third quarter to keep Paine within reach. From there, though, Miles put its lead into the stratosphere.
After a Pedrica Bain bucket at the 7:45 mark of the third quarter, Miles put the clamps on the Lady Lions. The Lady Bears forced six turnovers and Paine missed four shot attempts over the next four minutes. Meanwhile, Miles steadily attacked the basket for easy buckets and trips to the free throw line as part of a 13-0 run - capped by two
Symone Williams free throws - for a 46-26 lead.
Paine continued to battle into the fourth quarter, cutting its deficit to 58-51 with 4:21 remaining. But baskets by Hollis (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Jackson (14 points, seven rebounds, three blocks - all career-highs) ended the comeback attempt and pushed the Lady Bears to victory.
Asia Timmons had 11 points while Zhane' Green and Tania Ward each had 10 points for Paine.
Najla Shamsid-Deen (11 points, three steals),
Shierkerriea Nelson (eight points, six rebounds) and
Ashley McCrear (four points, seven rebounds) had solid performances for Miles, which travels to Claflin on Jan. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
