WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Miles' women's basketball team quick excursion into Florida did not end in victory as the Lady Bears dropped an 86-51 decision to No. 25 Rollins Saturday afternoon. The Tars (8-2) dominated the first quarter and shot 53 percent from the field for the game in sending Miles (2-6) to a third straight defeat.
Victoria Sutton (11 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals) was the only Lady Bear to score in double figures and led the team in in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals. But she could not stop the Tars from scoring the first eight points of the game and opening a double-digit lead inside the first seven minutes of the contest.
Najla Shamsid-Deen's 3-pointer with 3:09 left in the first quarter was the team's first field goal and was joined by a
Jasmine Hollis (four points) bucket as the only field goals in the opening period as Miles trailed 24-7.
Miles trailed by as many as 27 points in the second quarter but an 8-2 spurt, highlighted by two baskets from
Raiana Johnson (four points, three rebounds, two steals), brought some life to the Lady Bears offense. Still, Rollins dominated on the glass in the first half (27-12) and led 44-19 at the break. Sutton and
Darika Chelsey (six points) both nailed 3-balls in the third quarter as the deficit hit 31 points and another Sutton triple to open the fourth quarter briefly knocked the Rollins lead under 30 points. The Lady Bears did a better job of protecting the ball (four turnover) in the second half but could not overcoming the shooting and rebound deficiencies to make the game closer.
Miles is back in action on Dec. 30 when it hosts Paine in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.Â
