LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The Miles women's basketball team was able to avoid the long, cold-shooting streaks from the field against West Alabama on Wednesday and found itself in position to steal a win on the road in the fourth quarter.
But during a crucial stretch inside the last three minutes, the Lady Bears hit a tough patch and the Tigers made them pay. A bank-shot 3-pointer by J'Niyah Daniels with 2:32 left gave UWA the lead for good and Miles made just one field goal in the final three minutes of a 69-63 loss. West Alabama (4-6), which trailed by as many as nine points, swept the season series from Miles (2-5), which shot 50 percent from the field and held a slight advantage (34-33) on the glass, but they gave up 13 points on 12 turnovers in the second half and missed 7-of-11 free throws to let UWA back in the game.Â
Victoria Sutton's basket with 4:08 left in the second quarter gave Miles a 32-23 advantage, the second time the lead had hit nine points in the first half. UWA wiped out most of that lead but
Taylor Terry (10 points, six rebounds) scored her second straight basket with 30 seconds left to send the Lady Bears into the half with a 36-32 lead.
The Tigers would grab the lead midway through the third quarter but a 3-pointer by
Darika Chelsey (11 points), followed by a
Jasmine Hollis (two points, five rebounds, two assists) layup wih 10 seconds left in the period gave Miles a 46-45 lead after three. The Lady Bears led 51-47 early in the fourth quarter after a
Najla Shamsid-Deen (five points) bucket but the teams would battle to the end with six ties and five lead changes. But after Terry's jumper with 3:18 left tied the score at 59, Miles did not make another shot from the field until Sutton's layup with 39 seconds left, which was not enough.
Sutton had 11 points,
Ashley McCrear had eight points and seven rebounds, and
Symone Williams had seven points for Miles, which plays at Rollins on Saturday. tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
