LAKELAND, Fla. -- Miles had a nice start and a decent finish to Wednesday night's 111-74 loss to Florida Southern. The problem came in the middle as the Golden Bears struggled to make shots while the Moccasins' Trey Diggs seemingly did not miss any of his.
Diggs came off the bench to score a game-high 31 points and went 8-of-12 on 3-point shots. The Mocs (6-4) made 15 from downtown while the Golden Bears (0-7) only attempted 12 (and made four). That was as much an issue as Miles allowing FSC to shoot 53 percent from the floor in a game that it led by as many as 42 points in the second half.
Miles showed some verve early, making five of its first eight shots to open an early three-point lead. The Golden Bears made a concerted effort to get the ball inside to
Robert Jones (14 points, six rebounds) and he delivered, scoring on his first three attempts. He bucket with 15:27 left gave Miles a 12-11 lead.
Florida Southern scored the next eight points to take the lead for good but Miles continued to fight. A 3-pointer by
Carl Garcia (13 points, seven rebounds, five assists) cut the deficit to 25-19 with 8:45 to go. But from there, the shots stop falling for the Golden Bears and Florida Southern - especially Diggs - went to work. Diggs would make five of his next six shots, all threes, in the next five minutes to push the Mocs advantage to 19 points. The lead would get as high as 29 points before
Jeffrey Dockett hit a rainbow 3-pointer at the horn for a 59-33 halftime score.
As the game got out of hand, Dockett kept shooting and producing for Miles, scoring 14 of his team-high 23 points in the second half. But Diggs kept shooting and Miles got mauled on the glass as FSC won going away.
Aron Stewart had 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots for Miles, which plays Florida Tech in its Winter Classic on Dec. 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
