Miles got 13 points from
Victoria Sutton and 12 points and six rebounds from
Ashley McCrear in a 46-41 over the Lady Statemen Monday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win was the first in program history over the Lady Statesmen, a blueblood Division II program that has won six national titles, and broke a three-game skid.
The game was close throughout (10 ties and 12 lead changes), with neither side leading by more than five points, which did not happen until late in the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 38 when McCrear collected a Raiana Johnson miss and scored while she was fouled with 3:32 remaining. She converted the three-point play to give the Lady Bears (2-3) a lead they would not relinquish.
In the first half, DSU (0-4) shot better than Miles from the field (47 to 33 percent) and had a solid edge on the glass (17-10). But 19 turnovers by the Lady Statesmen led to 13 points for the Lady Bears, who held a 29-27 advantage at the break. But, as has been the case over the last week, Miles went cold from the field in the third quarter. The team missed 13-of-14 shots during the frame - the only make a bank-shot 3-pointer from Sutton as the shot clock expired) - and did not score during the last 7:24 of the period. An Alondrea Rush 3-pointer with 2:42 left gave Delta State a 42-39 lead and was the last scoring of the quarter.
But
Jasmine Hollis (seven points, seven rebounds) began the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game. McCrear would take over late, scoring seven straight points to give Miles the lead. Unlike last season, when Miles held a five-point lead with under two minutes to go before wilting in regulation and losing in overtime, the team finished the job with some solid free throw shooting to earn the first win over DSU in nine tries.
Takisha Jordan and Simone Jackson each had 12 points for Delta State. Najla Shamsid-Deen had seven points and three steals for Miles, which hosts Spring Hill Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
