After racing to a double-digit lead in the first half, it appeared that Miles would be the team that knocked Morehouse from the ranks of the undefeated.
But a 14-point advantage was whittled to two points by halftime and the Golden Bears had very few answers for Maroon Tigers guard Tyrius Walker in the second half, where he scored 26 of his game-high 35 points in a 77-69 Morehouse win at Knox-Windham Gymnasium Monday night.
Carl Garcia (17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists) was one of five Golden Bears that scored in double figures but it was not enough to keep them winless (0-6, 0-2 SIAC) on the season.
Miles quickly got out in front by attacking the basket. After watching the Golden Bears score eight straight points to start the game, the Maroon Tigers (7-0, 2-0) were forced to call a time out. That didn't quell the uprising, though, as consecutive layups by
Robert Jones (10 points, eight rebounds) pushed the lead to 15-4 less than six minutes into the contest.
A jumper by Garcia with seven-and-a-half left in the first half gave Miles a 26-12 lead and Morehouse did not show much resistance. But from there, things started going south for the Golden Bears. For the next seven minutes, Miles was unable to generate one shot attempt inside the 3-point line. There were seven 3-point misses along with seven turnovers and the Maroon Tigers capitalized, cutting their deficit to 29-27 at halftime.
An
Aron Stewart dunk punctuated a quick spurt to start the half, pushing the Golden Bears advantage back to six points. But Martravious Little (nine points) scored five points in a 7-0 run to give Morehouse its first lead less than two minutes into the second half.
Sheldon Wright (12 points) would answer with a 3-pointer to put Miles back on top and the two teams would trade buckets over the next five minutes before Walker hit a 3-ball inside the 13-minute mark to give the Maroon Tigers a 43-40 lead.
Unfortunately, Miles would not lead again. Morehouse would open a gap as wide as 10 points with four minutes to go. The Golden Bears would get as close as four points on two separate occasions but the Maroon Tigers would make 11-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.Â
Omar Alston had 12 points and 13 rebounds for Morehouse.
Jeffrey Dockett had 15 points and
Damian Archer added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for Miles, which hosts Spring Hill Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
