SELMA, Ala. -- Five players scored in double figures and Miles shot 67 percent from the field as the Golden Bears secured their first win of the season in a 102-83 win over Selma University Monday night. It was the first time Miles had eclipsed the century mark since the opening game of the 2015-16 season against Lee University - a span of 63 games.
Miles (1-4) opened the game on a 19-9 run as
Carl Garcia hit two 3-pointers and scored eight of his 10 points in the first six minutes of the game. But the first half belonged to
Sheldon Wright and
Jeffrey Dockett. The lead hit 40-20 when Wright (18 points) drained a 3-pointer with 4:21 left in the half, the largest lead during the first 20 minutes. The duo came off the bench and made all nine of their shots - including four 3-pointers - and scored 25 points as the Golden Bears took a 53-37 lead into the break.
The second half was much of the same as the Golden Bears dominated in all phases of the game. A basket by Dockett (team-high 20 points) gave Miles its biggest lead of the game, 68-42, with just less than five minutes played in the second half. A steal and basket by
Chris English (six points) put Miles at the century mark with less than two minutes to go.
Damian Archer (17 points) and
Kent James (12 points) joined three others in double figure scoring for the Golden Bears, who start conference play with a contest against defending SIACÂ champion Clark Atlanta at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
