TUSKEGEE, Ala. -- Miles entered Monday night's match against Tuskegee needing two wins over the Golden Tigers in the next 10 days, and some help, to qualify for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball championships next month.
Unfortunately, the Golden Bears were unable to get the all-important first win.
Miles was unable to mount any consistent offense during the entire match and suffered another set-point collapse in getting swept by Tuskegee, 25-13, 27-25, 25-20, at Chappie James Arena. The loss eliminated the Golden Bears (6-20, 3-14) from contention for the last Western Division spot in the SIAC Championships, which will go to either the Golden Tigers (6-24, 5-11) or Central State. It will mark the first time Miles will not play in the postseason since 2013.
Tuskegee scored the first six points of the match and led by as many as 13 points in the easy first set win. Miles had only three kills in the opening stanza, two by
Skyler Johnson, as it gave up 15 points by error and hit -.118.
It appeared that the Lady Bears had acquitted themselves in the second set. They led 14-7 but the Golden Tigers were able to cut their deficit to two points. Still, Miles bounced back and, after a combo block by Johnson and
Na'Kina Levingston, served for the set with a 24-18 lead. But Tuskegee, behind three service aces and two kills from Cyrani Butler, evened the score at 24. A kill by
Alexis Reed stemmed the tide and, again, put Miles on serve for the set at 25-24. But Tuskegee scored the next three points to take the set in heartbreaking fashion.
The Lady Bears got out to another cold start in the final set, trailing 7-1 and by as many as 10 points before battling back at the end. Unfortunately, it was not enough to keep them from dropping their 12th consecutive match to the Golden Tigers.
Shatesa Harris had four kills and seven blocks (one solo),
Tatiyana Thomas had 11 assists and three blocks,
D'Nautica Johnson had 10 digs, and Reed had four kills and three blocks for Miles, which hosts Judson College Thursday beginning at 6 p.m.
