Lady Bears fight back vs. Albany State
Box Score
What looked like a cakewalk for the Miles women's basketball team almost left the Lady Bears with cake on their collective face.
Miles opened a 16-point lead in the first half but needed a great escape in the fourth quarter to seal a 64-60 win over Albany State Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Ashley Steger (10 points, three assists)Â made two free throws to break a tie at 56,
Javonne Brown (eight points) knocked down two baskets and the Lady Bears (9-10, 4-4 SIAC) held the Lady Golden Rams (2-16, 2-7) to just one basket over the final 3:32 to even their conference record.
It did not appear that Miles would need any late-game heroics after
Ashley McCrear's (eight points) 3-point play gave the Lady Bears a 38-22 lead - their biggest of the game - with 2:13 left in the second quarter. But Albany State was able to cut the deficit to two late in the third quarter before using an 8-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to grab a 54-50 advantage with just less than six minutes remaining. The offense went ice cold between the third and fourth quarters as more than 10 minutes elapsed on the game clock between buckets by
Amoni Walker (five points) and
Larian Scott (10 points, five rebounds, two blocks, two steals). Still, Miles was able to recover and pull out its third win in its last four contests.
Alexandria James had 11 points and Zuri Frost added 10 for Albany State.
Victoria Sutton had 11 points and five rebounds and
Morgan Hardy added eight points and 13 rebounds for Miles, which hosts Fort Valley State Monday at 5:30 p.m.
