Lady Bears stumble against Concordia-Alabama
Box Score
The euphoria that was the season-opening tri-match sweep on Tuesday was washed away in a tidal wave of errors as the Miles volleyball team dropped a four-set match (23-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-25) to Concordia-Alabama Wednesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Skyler Johnson (13 kills, 17 digs) and
La'Promise Boone (35 assists, 11 digs) each had double-doubles but the Lady Bears (2-1)Â had 66 errors on the night to make things much easier for the Hornets (1-6).
The first three sets were extremely close and Miles was in position to sweep Concordia. In the opening set, the Lady Bears were on serve and led 23-22 but did not score another point as Keegan Snowden served out the game for the Hornets. It was much the same in the second set, this time with Miles on serve with a 22-20 advantage. A service error - one of 16 on the night by the Lady Bears - turned the ball over to Concordia and this time, LaTonia Raines served out the match.
Again, Miles took the lead in the third set but fell behind late as Concordia went for the sweep. But the Lady Bears fought back to earn the set when Johnson's big solo block pushed the match to a fourth set. But the Hornets jumped all over Miles, opening a 21-8 advantage at one point before coasting to the victory.
Alexus Moore (eight kills) and
D'leisha Dent (seven kills, team-high .286 hitting percentage) continued their solid starts to the 2016 campaign for the Golden Bears, who travel to Frankfort, Ky. for the SIAC Western Division Cluster beginning Friday morning.
