Golden Bears finish sweep of Tuskegee
Box Score
Miles' six senior baseball players had one final opportunity to get a conference victory at historic Rickwood Field Sunday afternoon and they took full advantage.
Cory Anderson had two hits and three runs batted in as the Golden Bears (25-12, 12-3 SIAC) came from behind to grab an 8-5 win over Tuskegee to complete a three-game sweep of the Golden Tigers (9-20, 5-7).
Coach
Kenneth Hatcher started all six of his seniors (Anderson,
James Gardner,
Jimmy Brown, Jr.,
Aaron Williams,
Keland Smith, and
Justin Langdale) and hit them in the top six spots in the batting order. They went on to produce eight of Miles' nine hits and scored all of the team's runs, all of which backed up
Jacob Schuster, who allowed just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings, striking out six.
Chase Williams got Miles on the board with a RBI double in the first but single runs in the second and third inning pushed Tuskegee into the lead. But the Golden Tigers had trouble fielding the ball on Sunday, and two errors in the bottom of the fourth opened the door for the Golden Bears. Anderson had an RBI single,
Xavius Burden followed with a run-scoring ground out and
Ryan Bargery added a RBI on a Tuskegee fielding error to give Miles a 4-2 advantage.
Two more unearned runs came in the fifth when Langdale, who reached on a single, scored on a wild pitch and Anderson added his second RBI of the game with a single that scored Smith, who reached on an error, for a 6-2 lead. The lead grew to 8-2 after seven on RBI from Anderson and Bargery and it looked as if the Golden Bears would coast to another win.
But trouble was brewing in the eighth. Tuskegee scored three times - helped by one of Miles' five errors on the day - and Schuster's day was done. Burden came over from third base to take over on the mound and he struck out Ken Spears to end the threat. He allowed just one baserunner - on an error - and pitched 1 1/3 inning to pick up the save.
