Baseball wilts late against UAH
Box Score Despite bouncing back from an early deficit, Miles gave up four runs in the latter inning to fall 7-3 to Alabama Huntsville Thursday afternoon at historic Rickwood Field.
Aaron Williams,
Keland Smith and
Damion Williams each had two hits for the Golden Bears (6-6) and Justing Langdale and
Xavius Burden each had runs batted in but it was not enough to as
Dylan Johnson (0-3) could not hold off the Charger bats.
UAH (9-4) took an early 3-0 lead when Trey Mathis lanched a 3-run homer in the top of the first. But Miles chipped away at Chargers starter Gabe Gunter. Langdale had a RBI single and Burden reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Smith, to draw the Golden Bears closer. Thee game was knotted at 3 after four innings as
Ryan Bargery scored on a fielding error by the Chargers in the bottom half of the frame.
But Miles' bats went silent while UAH was able to push across runs late. Mathis scored on a one-out single by Wright Hackett to give the Chargers the lead for good. The big blow came in the seventh. After Johnson retired the first two hitters, he allowed four straight baserunners, the last coming on a 2-run single by Justin Cantrell that extended the lead to 6-3 and ended the day for Johnson, who allowed 10 hits, three walks and hit two batters in 6 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. UAH pushed across another run in the eighth against
Christopher Elias to close out the scoring.
