Fourth quarter scoring freeze fells Lady Bears
Box Score
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Throughout most of Saturday's contest against Lynn, Miles was able to battle the Knights on every possession and found itself tied at 50 late in the third quarter.
But from there, the Lady Golden Bears offense went cold in a 76-58 loss to the Knights in the first game of the Lynn Holiday Classic. Miles led 50-46 with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter after
Larian Scott knocked down a jumper but from there, the team went 3-of-25 (12 percent) from the field as the Lynn ran away with the victory.
The loss was the second straight for Miles (4-5), which fell under .500 for the first time this season. Scott scored 15 points while
Taylor Terry has 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Bears.
Miles opened a seven-point lead in the first quarter and led 21-15 with 1:20 left in the period on a
Najla Shamsid-Deen (five points) layup. But Lynn's Paola Vazquez (game-high 20 points) sandwiched two free throws with two 3-pointers to hold a 23-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bears trailed by as many as eight points in the second period but tied the game at 41 on Scott's 10th point of the first half. But an offensive rebound and putback by Mahogany Hall (six points, six rebounds) gave the Knights a 43-41 lead at the break.
Over the first six minutes of the third quarter, Miles' defense was in charge, holding Lynn to 1-of-7 shooting and five turnovers in retaking the lead. But the Lady Bears went the final 4:20 of the period without a bucket as Lynn closed the quarter on a 12-1 run to take control of the game. It got worse in the fourth quarter as more missed shots, fouls and turnovers led to the Lady Bears' demise.
Brekia Henderson (12 points) and Janay Henderson (nine points, 10 rebounds) had strong efforts for Lynn while
Victoria Sutton (10 points)
Javonne Brown (six points, four rebounds) and
Morgan Hardy (seven rebounds, three steals) played well for Miles, which plays Saint Leo tomorrow at 11 a.m.
