There was very little drama in Miles' season-opening 86-42 beatdown of Selma University Wednesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears (1-0) opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter and pushed the lead by as many as 10 points each quarter thereafter.

But for a team with conference championship aspirations this season, the more important aspect of the big win was seeing everyone play, especially the newcomers who scored 38 points and grabbed 25 rebounds. Freshmen Victoria Sutton (team-high 15 points) and Najla Shamsid-Deen (11 points) were two of four Lady Bears to score in double figures and combined to make five of the team's seven 3-point field goals.

The team still featured its trademark pressure defense that held the Lady Bulldogs (2-8) to 19 percent shooting from the field and 31 turnovers that led to 25 points for Miles. Selma had just three made field goals in the second and third quarters combined and went 12 minutes between the first and second quarters without a bucket. The Lady Bears also dominated on the glass, holding a 64-45 advantage, led by Ashley McCrear's team-high nine rebounds.

Miles did have trouble containing Tatyanna Griffin, who despite missing 16 of her 18 shots from the field, scored 19 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked six shots. But she also turned the ball over 11 times for triple-double that the Lady Bears would gladly accept. While the sophomore post player was active for the Lady Bulldogs, she got little help from her teammates.

Larian Scott and Ashley Steger each scored 11 points, Morgan Hardy had eight points and six rebounds while Javonne Brown had seven points and eight rebounds for Miles, which hits the road to open the ECSU Tipoff Classic against St. Augustine Friday at 4 p.m.
