TALLADEGA, Ala. -- If the Miles volleyball team did not have to see Talladega College's Carla Noveas again, there is little doubt it would not be a problem for the Lady Bears.
The Tornadoes outside hitter was nearly unstoppable for the second time this season, racking up 16 kills, three aces, and two blocks while hitting a robust .464 in a three-set sweep of the Lady Bears (25-19, 25-10, 25-23) Thursday night at Callanan Gym. Falling behind early, not helped by 16 attack errors and 12 service errors, led to Miles' demise for the second consecutive match.
In the opening set,
Kayla Ford started with two service aces and Miles (9-18) took a quick 4-0 lead. But Talladega quickly erased the deficit and rolled out to a 17-8 advantage. The Lady Bears, behind strong play from
Briana Brown (three kills, six digs, two solo blocks), got as close as 23-18 but the Tornadoes were able to close out the set. The second set wasn't much of a contest, especially as Noveas continued to roll. She had 10 kills after two sets, just two less than the entire Miles team.
The Lady Bears did not go down without a fight. The third set saw the team take advantage of several Talladega miscues and, ultimately, grab an 18-17 lead. But tied at 22 and on serve, a foot fault on serve turned the ball over to the Tornadoes, who would finish out the straight-set victory.
Skyler Johnson had a team-high six kills while adding six digs.
Alexus Moore had four kills.
Lauren Moorer had a match-high 12 digs and Ford had 18 assists for Miles, which closes out the regular season with a home match against Tuskegee on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.
