Big Second Inning Propels Miles Past Lane
Box Score Through 1 ½ innings in Sunday's series finale against Lane, Miles had given up its first earned run of the series and found itself trailing for the first time. That was long fo
rgotten by the end of the next half inning.
The Golden Bears (15-24, 9-8 SIAC) jumped on the undermanned Dragons in the bottom of the second, scoring 13 runs and batting around twice in earning a 15-2 win that completed a 3-game sweep of Lane (0-22, 0-17) at Rickwood Field. Five different players had two hits in the game for Miles and
Justin Langdale and
Jimmy Brown Jr. each had three runs batted in – in the second inning.
Starter
Justin Bartley pitched four innings to get the win in the contest shortened by the 10-run rule. He allowed five hits, struck out five and allowed one run, which came on a RBI single by Robert Love in the second inning to give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage.
But the Miles avalanche started in the bottom of the frame. Eighteen batters came to the plate during the inning and the only one that did not reach base was pinch hitter
Christopher Smith, who smoked a pitch right to third base for an inning-ending double play.
That began a liberal amount of substitutions for the Golden Bears as coach
Kenneth Hatcher took his foot off the accelerator. They still added two more runs in the third, one on a RBI single by
Xavier Burden, to push the lead to 15-1. Among the substitutions was pitcher
Corey Anderson, who allowed just one hit and one run over the last three innings to earn the save.
Miles is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts West Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
