LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- Through nine games this season, Miles' baseball team has not had enough hitting to say the pitching has struggled and has not pitched well enough to say the offense has left little room for error.

That trend continued Thursday afternoon when the Golden Bears were swept by West Alabama, 12-1 and 8-0, at Tartt Field. Miles (1-8) had 11 total hits on the afternoon and scored its only run on a double play. Meanwhile, the pitching has continued to give up big innings as UWA (5-3) had five frames where they scored at least two runs.

In the opener, Justin Bartley (0-2) was tapped for two runs in the first inning and four more in the second, two of those runs scoring on wild pitches. With runners on first and third and no one out in the third, Aaron Williams hit into a double play to score Tristan Davis to cut the deficit to 6-1. Bartley was in trouble again in the fourth, where he loaded the bases and saw them all come in on a bases-clearing double by Eddie Kieffer as part of a five-run inning. Bartley gave up 11 runs (seven earned) in four innings.

The nightcap was all West Alabama, which hit four home runs off pitchers Austin Pate (0-3) and James Gardner. Miles was only able to muster six hits, two of them coming off the bat of Davis. The only extra-base hit was a double by Williams.

The Golden Bears are hitting just .235 as a team through nine games with an earned run average over 11. Miles hopes to reverse that trend beginning Saturday, when it hosts Clark Atlanta for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
