Grier dials long distance in win over Morehouse
Box Score After scoring at least 90 points in each of the first four games, Miles had a little trouble replicating those numbers Thursday night against Morehouse.
But
Maiscei Grier brought his offensive game against the Maroon Tigers, especially in the second half. The junior guard rained six of his seven 3-pointers over the final 20 minutes and scored a game-high 28 points as the Golden Bears handed Morehouse its first loss of the season, 74-56, at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Shaquille Cook also had a big night for Miles (3-2, 1-0) scoring 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Both teams went back and forth in the first half, with a running 3-pointer at the buzzer by Martravious Little helping Morehouse (4-1,0-1) tie the score at 29. But in the second hald, the Maroon Tigers got an up close-and-personal look at The Mase Grier Show. Last year's All-SIAC Second Team selection caught fire coming out of the break, making his first seven shots from the field. Six of those were 3-pointers (although he missed a free throw during the stretch), the last giving the Golden Bears a 65-46 lead with six minutes remaining.
While Grier was going to work on the outside in the second, Cook worked with free reign inside as Morehouse's rotation of bigs could not handle the Miles center around the basket. His breakaway dunk in the final minute finished the scoring and sealed the Golden Bears' second straight win. The defense also came to play, holding the Maroon Tigers to 31 percent shooting and forcing 18 turnovers.
Tyrius Walker, Tyrone Brown and Little each scored nine points to lead Morehouse.
Willie Gray had nine points and
Hasain Bunnell added eight points and seven points for Miles, which hosts Clark Atlanta on Saturday with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
