GOLDEN BEARS DROP GAME ONE TO CLAFLIN SIAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
ALBANY, GA – The Claflin University Panthers (23-20) the fourth seed defeated the Miles College Golden Bears (22-17) the fifth seed 10-8 in the first game of the 2011 SIAC Baseball Tournament that's being played at the Paul E. Eames Complex in Albany GA.
The start of the SIAC Baseball Championship was delayed, until 1:00 p.m., because of severe weather in the Albany GA area.
Miles scored eight runs on nine hits with six errors and Claflin scored ten runs on eleven hits and three errors. Dillon Thomas (4-1) was credited with the win in relief of Darius Gilliam and sophomore
Bradley McWilliams (8-6) took the loss for Miles.
Each team had one big inning. Claflin was the first to get on the score board, as the Panthers scored four runs on three hits and three Golden Bear errors. The Golden Bears turned the tide and took the lead with a six run top of the second with ten batters going to the plate.
Leading hitters for the Golden Bears were; senior
Patrick Melvin 2-for-5, three RBI's, junior
Jeffery Jones went 2-for-2, with one RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore
Anthony Jones had two hits, a RBI and two runs scored.
Donald Smith led the Panthers at the plate going 3-for-4, with two runs scored and two RBI's. Fedor Herrera went 1-for-4 with two RBI's and one run scored.
The loss drops the Golden Bears into the losers' bracket and will play either Stillman College or Paine College on Friday morning at 10:00 am. The win advanced the Panthers to the winners' bracket and will play at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
