LADY BEARS DEFEAT CLARK ATLANTA 71-62

FAIRFIELD, AL – Junior Sammeika Thomas led the Miles College Lady Bears (16-6; 13-5) in scoring with a team-high 23 points and team –high eight rebounds in the win over Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers in Wednesday night matchup at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears pounded the Lady Panthers ending the night with a 71-62 victory.

The Lady Bears played hard defense during the first half as they went up by eight points 26-18 on a jumper from Thomas with 7:21 left, but with 2:38 to go Clark Atlanta tied the game at 31-31 on a layup by Conisha Hicks. Senior Ashley Orphey two free throws with 55 seconds remaining gave Miles a 37-31 lead and another six point lead 39-33 off junior Alicia Ware layup with two seconds left in the half.

The lady Bears shot 45.7 percent from the field and 57.1 percent at the foul line, while Clark Atlanta hit 41.9 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from the free throw line. Both teams shot 37.5 percent from behind the arch.

Thomas scored nine points and Orphey 8 as they went to half up 39-33. Hicks lead the lady Panthers with 16.

The Lady Bears shot the ball 61 times against the Lady Panthers shooting 39.3 percent from the floor for the night. They hit 35.3 percent from behind the arch making 6-of-17 three's and 17-of-23 (73.9 percent) free throws.

Thomas scored on 7-of-12 shots, 2-of-3 three pointers, 7-of-9 free throws; four assist and blocked one shot. Junior Toccara Charles scored 13 points, Orphey added 8 points and a game-high seven assist. Junior Brandy Gillespie and Ware had six points apice, with Ware adding seven rebounds and freshman #Ra”Shawne Cox and junior Kamissah Shaw# five rebounds each.

Miles final home game is Saturday, February 19 as the play the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College during senior day at 1 p.m.
