MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Down 2-1 to Auburn Montgomery, Miles fought back to force a deciding set before walking off the Warhawks by scoring the final three points of the match to remain undefeated in its five-set triumph.
Karea Copeland had a monster night (23 kills, 17 digs, four service aces) and finished it off in style. The Lady Bears (3-0) trailed 13-12 in the fifth set before Copeland took a feed from
Alyzia Cola (32 assists, 15 digs) for her final kill of the night. She then reeled off two straight aces to give Miles its first-ever win over AUM (2-5).
Miles would not have had the opportunity to win in the fifth if it was not for some strong play in the fourth. Ahead by just a point, the Lady Bears would score 11 of the next 12 points to blow the game open. A big portion of the run came from the Lady Bears' work at the net, with Cola setting upÂ
Jaharia Hunter (12 kills, two blocks),
Destinee Evans (7-1-10, .600, three blocks) and Kofia Jackson-Woods (four kills), who also had a combo block with Evans during the game-changing scoring spree.
Things looked great early for the Lady Bears, who hit a scintillating .478 (11-0-23) in the opening set to put the Warharks on notice. But AUM responded by hitting .429 (17-2-35) in the second set to even the match. The third set was a back-and-forth affair with the score tied at 21 before AUM scored the final four points to take the middle game.
Cydney Moore (10 assists, 10 digs) joined Copeland and Cola with a double-double while
Bailey Jones (17 digs, nine assists) just missed.
Kyla Knox (14 digs) and
Aida Edwards (8-3-19, .263) also had solid efforts for Miles, which plays Thursday at West Alabama. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
