Miles to start women's flag football program

FAIRFIELD, Ala. — Miles College Athletics is proud to announce the launch of Women's Flag Football as a new competitive club sport beginning with the Spring 2027 semester, expanding athletic opportunities for women while positioning Miles at the forefront of one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.

The addition of Women's Flag Football reflects the College's continued commitment to expanding opportunities for female student-athletes, supporting gender equity in intercollegiate athletics, strengthening enrollment and recruitment initiatives, and providing innovative athletic opportunities that align with the evolving landscape of college sports.

"This is about creating opportunities for young women while continuing to strategically grow Miles College Athletics," said Fred Watson, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics. "Women's flag football is experiencing tremendous growth nationally, and we believe Miles College has an opportunity not simply to participate in that growth, but to help lead it within our conference, our community, and the HBCU landscape. This program will allow us to expand participation for women in sports, strengthen our recruiting reach, engage our community, and provide another opportunity for students to represent Miles College in intercollegiate competition."

Women's flag football continues to experience significant growth at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels. The sport's national expansion, combined with increasing opportunities for women to compete at the collegiate level, provides Miles College with an opportunity to establish a sustainable program while creating an additional pathway for prospective student-athletes.

The inaugural season will include two roundups where the team will compete in five games at each roundup, resulting in 10 roundup contests. The two roundups will be structured to ensure that every participating team competes against every other team at least once before the championship. The Mar. 12-14 roundup will be hosted by Miles, which will give the College an opportunity to showcase the emerging sport to students, alumni, prospective student-athletes, and the surrounding community.

"Hosting a roundup gives us an opportunity to showcase Miles College as a destination for women's collegiate athletics. Bringing multiple programs and student-athletes to our campus creates greater visibility for the College, provides an important recruiting opportunity, engages our students, alumni, and supporters, and gives young girls throughout Birmingham and the surrounding communities an opportunity to see women competing in collegiate flag football firsthand."

Teams may also compete in up to three contests against club programs. Each team must participate in a minimum of 12 contests during the season. The inaugural season will conclude with the championship, scheduled for Apr. 9–11 at Albany State.

Additional information regarding coaching leadership, tryouts, recruiting, the final roster, and other program updates will be announced by Miles College Athletics.
