Karea Copeland podium finish 2026

Copeland wins javelin throw at SIAC Championships

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Fielding a young team that saw many of the competitors representing the school for the first time, Miles' performance at the 2026 SIAC Women's Track and Field Championships presented by Toyota did not yield a team title. But the Lady Bears did produce an individual champion in Karea Copeland.

Copeland, a freshman, won the javelin throw with a distance of 114 feet and 5 inches, more than two feet beyond second-place finisher Ariyah Graham of Albany State. She set the mark on her second of six possible attempts, where she was already six feet better than the closest competitor. After faulting on her third attempt, she sat back and watched as the others took aim - and failed - to surpass her mark.

The first-place finish gave Miles 10 points, a number that was supplemented by the eighth-place finish in the javelin throw by freshman Nayla Wesley, whose 87 feet, two inches throw was enough to get another point for the Lady Bears.

Shannon Miles, a senior, did qualify for the finals of the 1,500-meter run but was unable to start in the finals. Kamora Taylor just missed qualifying in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with 10th and ninth place runs - respectively - in the preliminaries.
