Miles put on a closing show worthy of the seniors and the program that has established itself as the bellwether team of the SIAC over the past four seasons.
The No. 21 Lady Bears pasted a short-handed Savannah State squad 100-50 Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It was the second-most points scored by the Lady Bears (22-5, 20-4 SIAC), who dropped 105 points on Southeastern Baptist in 2023. It was the most points allowed in an SIACÂ contest since Tuskegee scored 101 on Central State in 2022.
It did not take long for Miles - winner of the SIAC West Division - to take control of the contest.
Jalyn Shelby (16 points, three rebounds) gave Miles the lead with a 3-pointer at the 7:46 mark of the first quarter. She scored eight straight points for a 10-4 lead, then made her third 3-ball of the opening frame to give the Lady Bears a 20-8 lead at the end of the period. The last bucket was part of a 12-0 run between the first and second quarters.
Madison Lee was fouled on a 3-point shot and nailed all three free throws to push the lead past 20 points for the first time - 30-9 - at the 8:12 mark of the second quarter. The Lady Bears advantage soared past 30 points in the period and was as high as 35 points on two
Samarian Franklin (nine points, eight assists, four rebounds) buckets late in the quarter. Miles led 54-20 at the half but there was still more offensive firepower to come.
A 16-2 run midway through the third quarter, started by a Lee 3-pointer and ended by a long ball from
Shannon Niles gave Miles a 78-33 lead with 1:13 left in the period. Niles made two freebies in the final second to send the Lady Bears into the fourth quarter with an 83-35 spread. The countdown to the century mark was on.
Savannah State, which dressed only seven players, scored just one basket over a four-minute stretch midway through the final quarter. When Lee nailed another 3-pointer with 4:22 left, Miles' lead eclipsed 50 points (96-44) for the first time. The Lady Bears finally hit the magic number on two free throws by Niles with 1:57 to go, which gave the team its biggest lead at 100-47.
The Miles seniors went out with a bang, led by MAkayla Rieves, who scored 20 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, added four steals and three assists. Other big senior performances came from Niles (14 points, five steals), Lee (nine points, eight rebounds),
Tawana Nevels (six points, seven rebounds),
Mya Millner (four points, three rebounds), and
Laila Minter (five points).
