Miles went without a field goal for the first 12 minutes of the game while Savannah State could not miss, making its first 10 shots as the Golden Bears dropped its final regular season on Saturday afternoon, 86-75, at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. It gave the Tigers (14-11, 14-9 SIAC East) a season sweep of Miles (19-7, 17-7), which finished in second place in the SIAC West.
The Golden Bears missed their first 16 shot attempts and turned the ball over six times over the first 12 minutes before
Jaden Emory (game-high 19 points) nally made a 3-pointer. By then, Savannah State had opened a 26-point lead on the strength of their red-hot shot from the field. If it looked like the Tigers would not miss, it was because they didn't. Three-pointers, jumpers along the baseline, layups and dunks were everywhere as SSU opened a 21-point lead in the process.
Miles trailed 55-28 at halftime and was behind as many as 29 points at several points in the ball game. The Golden Bears went on a mini-run behind
Najashi Tolefree and
Tyon Thompson. When
Frankie Idlett knocked down two free throws with 11:28 to go, Miles had cut the deficit to 65-48. It was still a long way to go, but there were signs of life for the Golden Bears.
But then, the offense got bogged down again and Savannah State shut the door on any thoughts of a comeback. Miles went more than five minutes without a field goal, again ending with an Emory 3-ball, but a 13-3 run effectively ended the game. The Golden Bears closed the game strong, outscoring the Tigers by 17Â points over the final eight minutes, but it was not enough.
Among the seniors, Tolefree (13 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals),
Cameron Jernigan (18 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks), and Thompson (eight points, two rebounds) got into the scoring column for Miles, which also honored
Jamarkus Alexander,
Elijah Terry and
Isaiah Davis prior to the ball game.
