FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Miles saw its three-game win streak come to an end Saturday in a 46-0 loss to Kentucky State at Alumni Field. It marked the largest shutout loss for the Golden Bears since a 51-0 defeat against Tuskegee in 2010.
The Golden Bears rushed for 201 yards against the Thorobreds, the second straight week Miles (3-4, 3-2) has eclipsed the 200-yard mark and third time this season. But struggles in the passing game - just 73 yards passing among three quarterbacks - and a multitude of mistakes, which included 13 penalties for more than 100 yards and four total turnovers on a rain-soaked day, did not give the team much room to battle against one of the SIAC's top teams.
KSU (5-2, 4-1) did not need a lot of time to find the end zone, with no scoring drive taking more than five minutes and two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the third quarter that turned a somewhat manageable 22-point deficit at halftime impossible to surmount. Miles' best opportunity to score came in the fourth quarter. Following an interception by
Antonio White, Jr., Toderick Withers broke free for a 24-yard run that placed the Golden Bears on the Thorobreds' 1. But four straight plays from that spot yielded no yards, with quarterback
Brinley Vandiver losing the football on a quarterback sneak on fourth down to seal Kentucky State's goal line stand.
Spencer Voss had a team-high seven tackles (six solo), White had six tackles as did
Steven Jones, who had two tackles for loss and a forced fumble for Miles, which is back in action on Oct. 24 when it hosts Central State for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
