Shooting with volume and accuracy, Miles put on a 3-point shooting clinic Thursday night against Lane.
The Golden Bears made more 3-pointers (16) than 2-point shots (11) in an 82-71 win over the Dragons, shooting 57 percent from downtown in the process. The win was the 12th straight for Miles over Lane and ran the Golden Bears home win streak to 24 consecutive games. Miles needed every one of the shots from deep as the contest was tied with seven-and-a-half minutes remaining.
David Williams got the 3-point party started early by splashing his first two attempts from beyond the arc in the opening minutes to give Miles its first lead at 6-4. While the long-range shooting idled just a bit,
Cameron Jernigan (six points, 11 rebounds, two assists, block) was able to show that he does his best work near the basket. He jab stepped inside before taking a baseline route to basket for a thunderous dunk with 7:40 left in the first half that tied the game at 18.
But down by two, the Golden Bears really started to find their mark from the outside.
Jamarkus Alexander hit a 3-ball to put Miles on top.
Shannon Jones and
Frankie Idlett followed with big threes of their own on consecutive possession to help Miles open a 31-22 lead with 3:10 left in the half. But between the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, the Dragons scored 13 consecutive points to open a 35-31 lead at the 17:34 mark.
From there, the 3-pointers began coming like waves for the Golden Bears, crashing against the shores of the Lane defense. Williams (game-high 18 points, 5-of-9 3-pointers) drained two more to give Miles a 39-37 lead with 15 minutes left. On the next possession, Alexander (nine points, 3-of-7 3-pointers) drained another triple. Lane would go on a run to go up three but
Jaden Emory got in on the 3-point fun and tied the game at 45 with 12:30 remaining.
Every time Lane would answer and take the lead, Miles had another 3-ball waiting. Down two, Alexander made it rain from 3 to put Miles back in front. Lane would retake the lead but Jones had the 3-point answer. The Dragons tied the game at 55 before Idlett made another trey to put Miles ahead.
One more time, Lane tied the game at 58. But, again, it was Idlett hitting the big 3-ball to put Miles ahead for good. The Dragons cut the deficit to one before Jones bookended 3-pointers as part of a 13-4 run that gave Miles a 75-64 lead with two minutes remaining. The lead never dipped below 10 points the rest of the way. The Golden Bears shot a spectacular 77 percent (10-of-13) from beyond the arc in the second half to keep Lane at bay.
Elijah Greer Dawson had 18 points and eight assists to lead the Dragons. Idlett (17 points, 3-of-5 3-pointers, six rebounds, six assists), Jones (16 points, 4-of-5 3-pointers, four assists) and
Najashi Tolefree (12 points, six rebounds, three assists) helped pace the offense for Miles, which hosts LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday at 3 p.m.
